Typically, most bloggers have a “type” of blog that they fit within. Lifestyle, photography, advice, design, food, etc., you name it – there is a ton of variety out there for your reading pleasure! And oftentimes, blogs will fit into several different categories which keeps things interesting. As a blogger, it’s important to develop and define your niche. That is to say, find out what works best for your audience and how you will thrive.

It’s hard to nail down your niche right away. Sure, you can be specific and say that you are a “design” blogger – but what does that mean? Do you only share your work or do you dive into advice, tips, and tutorials as well? Who knows! The key to discovering your niche is by trial & error. Blog what you are interested + passionate in sharing. Then, tailor your content for your audience ever so slightly. They will SHOW you what they like and why they keep coming back. Here are a few ways of figuring out your reader’s interestes :

ONE Pinterest is a great resource to find out what your readers enjoy and are pinning! Simply type in http://pinterest.com/source/yourblogname.com into your browser bar and VOILA – look at all that content from your blog! You can see an example of mine right here. This is a good way to analyze, visually, what your visitors are drawn to. What’s being pinned over and over again? You’ll start to notice some patterns, I can promise you that.

TWO Secondly, Facebook is another great tool for gathering data and the idea behind this one is pretty simple. What do people like? Scroll through your timeline and check out the posts you’ve shared that have the MOST likes and take note. Beyond that, look into what posts have been “shared” via facebook. That’s a biggie! People only really share on facebook when they’re serious about liking something.

THREE Last but not least, our pal Twitter is a haven for sharing!! How often do you check out your interactions tab when logged in?? Note that if you’re not following somebody, you won’t be notified on your phone about their new replies or links, so check this tab on a daily basis. You will see WHO is sharing your posts, asking you questions, and sending their thoughts about what they’ve enjoyed reading.

By combining these three resources together, you will notice over time what it is that your readers enjoy about your blog. Now, I’m not saying that you should base your blog around what your readers want all of the time, because at the end of the day … it’s YOUR blog. Always be true to what you’re sharing and why you’re in the blogging biz. It is nice, however, to take your readers into account here and there. After all, they are the ones stopping back for more!

committing to blogging is a lot of fun but also a lot of work. it is so important to make sure you blog about stuff you really care about and are passionate about. otherwise it will turn into a “chore” which defeats the purpose of blogging!

and if needed in the future one can always bring in contributors to help making all readers happy :)

  15. Christine says:

Very interesting! Crazy to see what is involved behind a blog, something that often starts out as just a place to rant. I’m still trying to find my niche. My personal blog is 1 year old now, I categorize it as a ‘lifestyle’ blog since I cover just about everything I’m interested in, whether it’s fashion, makeup, food… But often it seems all over the place! I guess I’ll have to reevaluate. :) Thank you for this post!
